Proposal: Add lithium to table salt - consent eu

From consent eu

Lithium is essential and in most European regions (assumed: 1mg/day for adults) is not taken up through food and beverages in sufficient amounts. Therefore, most people should supplement their diet with additional Lithium. Only about 1mg/day of Lithium is required, but side effects can be expected from around 40mg/day onwards. This would therefore represent a safe application area where supplementation to food, similar to the iodine supplementation to food salt, could be implemented.

The advantage of this solution would be that no one would have to worry about ensuring an adequate dosage. This would also practically ensure that children are adequately supplied with Lithium and thus potential developmental deficits could be prevented.[1]

The exact dosing amount for food salt would, in the event of this proposal being implemented, be determined by experts.

ⓘMost people don't get enough Lithium through diet. Adding it to food could be safe and effective.
ⓘLow-dose lithium protects the brain against neurodegeneration, meets the criteria of an essential trace element and is hard to overdose. It should therefore be approved as a dietary supplement.
ⓘLithium should not be classified as a harmless dietary supplement, as it can be toxic even at low doses. Its medical use is primarily limited to severe mental illnesses.
